What should you describe?

Name the affected rooms or fittings, when you first noticed the problem, and whether it is constant or intermittent. Mention any visible damage you have already seen. Leave covers closed and do not test live wiring.

A trip does not tell you the repair

A safety switch may trip for several reasons. A failed fitting, appliance or circuit can also produce similar symptoms. A licensed electrician needs to inspect the installation before anyone can say whether a repair, replacement or other work is needed.

What changes the assessment?

A fault that appears only when one appliance runs is different from a fitting that never works, but neither pattern proves the cause. Tell the electrician when you first noticed it, whether other rooms are affected and what was in use at the time. If you have already stopped using a damaged outlet or appliance, say so. A useful assessment identifies the cause, explains the proposed repair and confirms what has been tested. You should not have to agree to unrelated replacement work without an explanation of why it is needed.

One common question

Can I keep resetting a switch that trips?
Repeated tripping needs assessment. Do not bypass the device or keep resetting it to force power back on. If there is fire, electric shock or a fallen line, keep clear and call 000.
